About KOI
KOI was a Spanish esports organisation that competed in the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC), the premier tier of professional League of Legends across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Born from the merger of an established competitive brand with a heavily followed content and streaming operation, KOI carried a distinctly Iberian identity into a circuit long dominated by Northern and Western European powers. The project ultimately wound down, and today the organisation is remembered as a former participant in the region’s top flight.
A Spanish Presence in European League of Legends
KOI arrived in the LEC at a moment when the league had transitioned to a franchised, three-split calendar spanning Winter, Spring and Summer, with the standings feeding into international qualification. For a Spanish-rooted brand, reaching this stage was significant: Spain’s competitive scene had historically fed talent upward through regional leagues, and KOI represented an attempt to plant a flag directly among the continent’s elite rather than remaining a feeder.
Competing in the LEC Era
The LEC is widely regarded as one of the four major regions in global League of Legends, alongside Korea, China and the Americas. Teams battle not only for domestic titles but for berths at the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship, where European sides have historically punched above expectations. Within that pressure-cooker environment, KOI shared the stage with long-standing organisations and ambitious newcomers alike, each fighting for a limited number of playoff slots each split.
Because KOI is no longer operating in the league, its story sits within the broader narrative of consolidation that has repeatedly reshaped European esports. Brands merge, rebrand and dissolve as ownership groups reassess the economics of top-level competition, and KOI’s arc reflects that volatility as much as any single result on the Rift.
As a former LEC competitor, KOI remains part of the historical fabric of EMEA League of Legends. Its legacy is tied to the wider ambition of bringing Spanish esports culture onto the continental main stage, and the organisation’s chapter in the league serves as a reference point for how quickly fortunes and structures can change in modern professional play.
