Shadow Step lets him leave through walls whenever a skirmish turns bad, which strips most of the value out of Thundering Smash — Volibear only builds speed while chasing across open ground, and a wall ends the chase instantly.

Raw stats are close enough that neither side wins by attrition alone. Kayn opens with 655 health and 38 armor, reaching 2,406 and 114.5 at level 18; Volibear starts at 650 health and 35 armor and climbs to 2,418 and 123.4. Both spend mana, both deal physical damage, and both travel at 340 base movement speed. Kayn’s 175 attack range gives him a marginal edge on individual trades against 150. What tilts longer fights toward Volibear is The Relentless Storm, which stacks attack speed and eventually adds magic damage to his attacks, so armor by itself will not hold him off.

Kayn’s kit answers that by refusing long fights: Reaping Slash and Blade’s Reach chip from a distance, and Umbral Trespass converts accumulated damage into a kill. The caveat is execution — Kayn is rated 8 for difficulty against Volibear’s 3, and the form chosen through The Darkin Scythe changes what the fight looks like after twenty minutes.
