Karthus carries a difficulty rating of 7 against Amumu’s 3, and a fair amount of that difficulty comes from Requiem — a channeled, three-second ultimate that hits every enemy champion on the map regardless of position, but only if Karthus survives the channel itself. In a jungle clash, that’s a real liability: Bandage Toss can interrupt the setup entirely by stunning Karthus mid-cast if Amumu is anywhere in range, and Karthus’s own passive, Death Defied, only helps him cast spells after death — it doesn’t stop him from being caught before he gets the chance to use it.

Amumu wins the pairing 57.5% of the time across 134 games on patch 16.13.1. Karthus’s 620 HP and 21 base armor are both on the low end for a jungle matchup, and at 450 range he still has to commit to a fixed casting animation for Lay Waste and Defile rather than kiting freely. Curse of the Sad Mummy’s AoE stun is well suited to closing that gap before Wall of Pain’s move-speed reduction can be positioned defensively. Karthus’s 30 magic resist doesn’t do much against Amumu’s magic damage output either, and his 2,490 HP by level 18, while higher in raw number than Amumu’s 2,283, comes on a squishier armor base that leaves him exposed once caught out of position.
